Midwives are the traditional care providers for women during pregnancy. In general, midwives follow the principle that pregnancy and birth are normal, healthy, personal events until proven otherwise. As a result, midwives generally take a lower-tech approach than obstetricians and other doctors typically do.
A Certified Nurse Midwife provides the following:
Preconception counseling and infertility
Care during pregnancy and childbirth
Normal gynecological services (such as pap smears and vaginal/bladder infection treatment)
Care of peri- and post-menopausal women
An emphasis on health and wellness education and preventive care
