February is Heart Month

Heart attack: Quick action saves lives.Everyone should know the warning signs of a heart attack. The first step in saving a heart attack victim’s life is to recognize its warning signs.  The more signs and symptoms you have, the higher the likelihood that you may be having a heart attack.

General symptoms and warning signs of a heart attack include:

• Pressure, fullness or a squeezing pain in the center of your chest that lasts for more than a few minutes
• Pain extending beyond your chest to your shoulder, arm, back, or even to your teeth and jaw
• Increasing episodes of chest pain
• Prolonged pain in the upper abdomen
• Shortness of breath and sweating
• Impending sense of doom
• Lightheadedness and/or fainting
• Nausea and vomiting

Expect denial of the problem.  Many victims deny that anything is serious.  They often comment that they are “just not feeling well.”
The importance of time can’t be overemphasized. If you can get medical help fast enough, clot-dissolving drugs can be used, and they often help restore some blood flow to the heart, thus minimizing damage.
Be safe rather than sorry. If you suspect a heart attack, don’t wait. Get medical help IMMEDIATELY!
