The History of St. Croix Regional Medical Center

In 1919, a medical clinic and hospital were founded by Dr. J.A. "Jake" Riegel and located in a family home in St. Croix Falls known as the “Baker House.” By mid-century, however, a growing area population, state and federal government regulations, and changes in medicine made it clear that a modern hospital building was needed in the community.

In 1955, the original portion of the area’s first hospital—St. Croix Valley Memorial Hospital—was built. Owned by the community of St. Croix Falls, it was used until May of 2007, when it was demolished to make way for St. Croix Regional Medical Center’s new surgery center. The services it housed—Behavioral Health, a Sleep Clinic, and Human Resources—were permanently relocated to other areas of the medical center complex.

In 1971 a major building project added much of the present facility, with small additions and remodeling occurring in the 1980's. On April 1, 1998, the St. Croix Valley Memorial Hospital expanded its presence as a health care provider, and established a satellite clinic in Frederic, Wisconsin. It also purchased a new state of the art CT scanner, mammography suite, DEXA Scan and fixed MRI to enhance its Diagnostic Imaging Services.

The River Valley Medical Center established a partnership of doctors in 1957, and later incorporating in October of 1971. The physicians opened the Balsam Lake Clinic, their first satellite clinic, in 1982 in a former bank building on the main street of Balsam Lake. Four years later, with the support of the city of Milltown, the clinic opened up a second location in Milltown. In June 1987, the River Valley Pharmacy was founded, providing the hospital and clinic with an on-site location for easy access to prescription medications.

The Balsam Lake Clinic closed in 1994 because of its inability to meet ADA building guidelines, and just two years later, the Milltown clinic was closed to make way for a new larger clinic, the Unity Clinic. Unity was a joint venture between the physician group and the hospital, and was built just north of Balsam Lake, Wisconsin, near Unity Schools.

On July 1, 1999, after much negotiation, St. Croix Valley Memorial Hospital and River Valley Medical Center merged to form what is known today as St. Croix Regional Medical Center.

Through the late 90s, continued area population growth and an ever increasing number of patients made it clear that St. Croix Regional Medical Center had outgrown its clinic space, and construction of a new clinic in St. Croix Falls began. On June 10, 2002, the doors opened on a new three-story medical clinic. The result was an eye-pleasing and functional building designed at every turn to benefit patients, both through comfort and ease of use. Much effort was also made to create a staff work environment that would help them provide care more quickly and efficiently.

Today, the St. Croix Falls clinic provides facilities for routine medical care, minor procedures, and diagnostics. The hospital complements the clinic’s capabilities with on-site MRI, CT, and PET/CT scanning, surgical and procedure rooms for minor, major, and outpatient surgery, physical rehabilitation services including cardiac rehabilitation, physical and occupational therapy, massage, acupuncture, a full range of laboratory services, and much more (see “Patient Services” elsewhere in this website).

The Medical Center’s gorgeous birthing center offers new parents and their loved ones a warm, home-like environment in which to bring a new child into the world. The Medical Center also has a new state-of-the-art Emergency Care Unit staffed round-the-clock by in-house emergency care specialists. In addition, three conveniently located Medical Center clinics offer 24-hour, same-day appointment scheduling as well as urgent care services for minor health concerns that can’t wait for a scheduled appointment.

St. Croix Regional Medical Center is a nonprofit 501c3 healthcare facility providing a wide range of physician and hospital services to the residents of the St. Croix River Valley area. St. Croix Regional Medical Center prides itself in being a contributing member of the entire community.
